FAQs Series Starting Sunday

I am reposting the initial post that I had put on the blog about our FAQs series… We will be starting this coming Sunday at 1030 am, and I am still taking suggestions… thanks

Ok, I have to admit, I am super-excited. Have this idea for an upcoming sermon series (ok, stole the idea a little). I am going to preach a sermon series on FAQs (Frequently asked Questions): What the Bible says about ?… Here is the concept. For a couple weeks we will go through some of the basics and some not so basic. We will engage with what the Bible says about a topic or struggle… I think it will be great.

So, here is where you come in. I have some topics that I think would be good to go through, but I really think this will be great if a majority of it is people generated. So, what are you curious about… What topics, struggles, bible passages would you like me to dig out. I want to know, and I want to preach about it.

To Stub your toe or not… That is the question…

So, the other day I was up several times in the middle of the night… My dogs decided they would bark at something (probably just their instinct, can’t hold it against them) and one of my daughters decided to fall out of bed (well, she probably didn’t decide, I am sure it was accidental – but really, how do you fall out of the bottom of the bed… she is only like 2 and 1/2 feet tall… somehow in here sleep, she traveled twice her height to get to the point tha she could actually fall out… how does that happen? {She wasn’t hurt})

You get the picture –> I spent some time walking around in the pitch darkness of my house. Thankfully, I navigated the whole scenario quite well and actually stubbed exactly zero toes. Contrast that situation to when you are sleeping in a hotel room and have to get up in the middle of the night and you don’t even know where the light switch is… So, you do that fold your toes under kind of walk, because you just know that one of the chairs is lurking, waiting – ready to pounce.

So, back to my house: As I was getting back in bed, I was struck by this thought. You know, we really need to be able to navigate the Word of God this way. If we really want to live and follow God, we need to know Him. We need to know His nature, His nuance. The best way to discover God – who He is and what He thinks is through a thorough and familiar study of His Word. We need to be in the Bible… We need to know how to find what we are looking for. We need to be able to access His promises. We need to know how and where He describes who He is.

The reason that I can walk through my house in the pitch darkness without pain (well, sometimes there is the spare hard plastic princess slipper that presents and issue/ sharp intake of breath) is that I have spent copious amounts of time walking around the house in the daylight. I am familiar with it, I am comfortable in it. I know where I am going because I have walked there.

We need to be the same way with the Bible… In the dark hour of the soul is not the first time that we need to engage in discovering the answer from God. The ability to go in the Word where you need to is purchased from hours of study in the light. When we are stumbling around a hotel room in the pitch black, we wish we were more familiar with the layout. Let’s not get caught not having digested the Word of God.

Yard Sale 09

Every year we have a massive yard sale. Our goal is to invite people from all over the community to come and participate. This year our annual yard sale will be on the 10th of October, and it will start at 7am. We have space open for people to come and sell. There is no charge to set up. Noise

I am thinking about noise today… Noise is what surrounds communication. Noise is any potential distraction that makes it hard for the receive to receive the message. Noise can be literal (if there is music blaring, it is hard to hear someone speak) or figurative (in the realm of social media there is a lot out there [banal posts, irrelevant advertising, etc.], on a more personal level: noise can be how we present ourselves [facial expressions, attire, posture, conflicting messages etc...])

We have the opportunity to participate in and add to the conversation. We should not allow ourselves to be distracted by nor participate in the preponderance of noise out there. You have the opporunity to share your story or testimony, to leverage people with the message of your life, eleminate the noise to keep your message focused and clear. Recognize that you have the opportunity to speak life into people and don’t allow what you communicate to confuse that message.

Resume/ Interviewing Workshop

We will be hosting another interviewing/ resume workshop this Saturday the 19th at 1pm at Bethel… the information is fundamentally the same as the first time, so I am reposting the description from then….

Folks,

We will be hosting a FREE resume/interviewing workshop this Saturday at 1pm. One of the guys in the church is an engineering recruiter and he looks at resumes and conducts interviews for a living. He is going to take some time to let you know what interviewers are looking for in your personal presentation as well as your written presentation of yourself through your resume. Additionally, he will take time to answer questions as well as review the existing resumes of the participants.

I have done my own reading and seen suggestions like the importance of volunteering while you are laid off… activities to involve yourself in… courses to take etc… Jarrett will be able to point you toward the best things to make you stand out to potential employers.

Make it a point to come out and experience this workshop if: you are looking for a job, want to update your resume, are interested in how to present yourself in an interview or think you might be interested one day.

What Promises are you holding on to?

The Bible is rich in promises that God makes to us. We have trouble when we don’t recognize them or we don’t hold on to them. You need to grab ahold of the promises from the Bible that apply to the friction point of your life. Confess those back to God. Get his perspective on it. Pursue Him along the line of His promise, don’t let up. Pray until God moves…

So, what are your friction points? What does the Bible say about those topics? What does the Bible say about God in reference to those topics? What are the “if”/ “then” statements concerning those points? (if you… then I will…)

Phil Cana Speaking Sunday at Bethel

We have a totally awesome thing happening Sunday… Phil Cana (Senior Leader of Sheffield Christian Life Centre – Sheffield England – http://www.sheffieldclc.org/) will be speaking… Phil has a strong prophetic gifting, and I have the pleasure of hearing him speak to GCI Leaders at the GCI 411 Leader’s Meeting today… I think his words for us there were definitely from the heart of God, and I couldn’t be more excited about what he is going to bring for us on Sunday… It is not every day that we will have the opportunity to have a guy like Phil in our fellowship, and I am really looking forward to us receiving from him…

So, be there… bring a friend, it will be a great impartation from a great friend and man of God.

Some days it isn’t easy to remember this, but Jesus died for people. We will get busy doing great stuff or have a perfect system worked out – some one will come in and make it messy, and then boom we are upset because now it has been thrown off. You have to remember Jesus didn’t die for what you do, or your system, or your preference, convenience, happiness… He came, lived a perfect life, fulfilled the law, died and rose again for people.

Dealing with people often gets messy. Many times those with whom you are in relationship don’t schedule easy times to need you. They don’t check with your schedule before having a blow up with their spouse and needing a friend to minister life to them. They don’t check to see if you are free before they get news that their child has an illness. They forget that it might not be convenient for you to discuss an area of life dominating sin. Yet, Jesus told us to love and serve people. There is a reason that you are in relationship with them, it is to love them and point them to Jesus.

So, remember people are the point. Love God, Love people…
